BARNSTABLE COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Seated in Barnstable Village, Barnstable County government  provides specific safeguards and services to benefit every town on Cape Cod.  It  is always on the pulse of environmental challenges, technological advancements, disaster preparation, and more. 

 

How is the County  Government Structured?

Under  a home rule charter created in 1988 the County’s government is comprised of a legislative branch with delegates from each of the Cape’s 15 towns, and an executive branch comprised of three regional commissioners who supervise and direct  the Cape Cod Regional Government.  The Assembly of Delegates is overseen by the Board of Regional Commissioners. Barnstable’s delegate is Patrick Princi. The County Administrator oversees operations to ensure they adhere to the County charter and administrative code.


The Cape Cod Commission is an agency of the Barnstable County regional government however it is funded separately.  It coordinates use of the region’s land and other resources and has regulatory powers.

Each of the 15 towns located  on Cape Cod is represented by a Delegate to the Asse. The voters or each municipality elect the Delegate to represent them on a non partisan basis,

The Assembly and Board of Comm-issioners work together to preserve and enhance regional services in Barnstable County.  

This is the branch of County government responsible for adopting new legislation (ordinances) and maintaining checks and balances over the executive branch.

They are the legislative and policy-making branch of town government.

The Board of Regional Commissioners holds the executive powers of the Cape Cod regional government. The Commissioners supervise and direct  all agencies of the Cape Cod regional government.

The County Administrator serves as the Administrative Officer of the County, working under the policy direction of the County Commissioners. She oversees the operations of departments, ensuring County policies are implemented in accordance with the Barnstable County Home Rule Charter and Barnstable County Administrative Code.
